In the midst of Brazil's escalating e-waste dilemma, Recicla emerged as a trailblazing solution. Founded in 2020, it aimed not just to address waste collection but to redefine Centro Federal de Tecnologia Celso da Fonseca (CEFET)’s approach to waste management, while mobilizing the community towards sustainable practices.

The vision behind Recicla was twofold:

  • To enlighten individuals about responsible e-waste recycling, an issue of acute relevance in Brazil.

  • To establish a forum where both individuals and institutions like CEFET could catalog their e-waste, thereby linking them with collectors specialized in efficient recycling.

Embarking on this journey with prior experience in React, the developmental phase was akin to climbing a steep learning curve. Despite wrestling with challenges in responsive design, I witnessed the platform evolve from an idea to an actionable solution. While it had its initial design pitfalls, the platform functioned efficiently for its designated purpose.

Recicla manifested as a comprehensive database for CEFET and the wider community. Its efficacy was underlined by the multitude of listings and the high traffic it attracted. Although I spearheaded its development, the project transcended beyond coding, featuring community educational sessions—one notably held in the Maré community—thus amplifying its social footprint.

Recicla’s innovative approach to waste management didn't go unnoticed. It received coverage in the "Brazilian Journal of Development," thereby widening its influence and fortifying its credibility.

In sum, Recicla serves as a concrete example of the monumental impact grassroots initiatives can have on tackling intricate social challenges. While recognitions and publications offer validation, the project’s true triumph lies in its capacity to enhance societal wellbeing by championing responsible waste management and fostering community education.
